Fish Out of Water....Back in the Swim!

Two months in Hawai'i showed me that as beautiful and seductive as it is, this was not a good place for me to think about settling, especially at this time of my life. Almost immediately, I was missing my sense of connectedness with friends, family, co-workers and clients. The economic hardships that people who work to live in Hawai'i face are beyond my tolerance.

Needless to say, I am happy to be home at The Union Gent, and don't look to be straying anytime soon!

"The Motley Crew Bid Adieu"

Saturday, January 22, 2011 was my last day at The Union Gent, and I will miss everyone tremendously! I have new projects to explore and I am moving on from the finest place I have ever worked. There are no words for the affection and gratitude I feel for Chuck, Pat and Karen. And I had the wonderful opportunity to work next to Frank Archini for three years. I will miss my co-workers, my customers, my friends; one and the same--very, very much! Aloha!

The Union Gent is A Great Place to Get a Haircut--and a GREAT Place to Work

I have now been working at the Union Gent for almost four years, and I look forward to going to work every day, because it is such a positive environment. It makes me so happy to be working with the most professional people in this field, who genuinely love their work and their customers the way that I have over the years. I feel like I have found a home for my work that is even more fulfilling than the years that I operated Cow Hollow Cutters.

Recently a long-time Union Gent customer wrote a love letter about the place on the business' Yelp.com page:

I have had the pleasure...no honor.. of visiting Union Gent every 3 weeks for the past 20 years. I don't visit my natural family that often. If I'm having a bad day, or even a good day that i wish to share with someone(s) of substance, this is the place to be. Always listen, make you feel like you are the only one in the shop that matters...and that's saying something as you are never the only one in this shop. Chuck, who is presently my haircutter, awards me with a great haircut ...all the time. And trust me, i am no easy cut... tough hair, never holding my head still...never matters to Chuck (if it does, he 's never said so). Of greater import, is the transition Chuck afforded me when, about a year ago my regular Union Gent haircutter, Frank, relocated to heaven. A sad day, but like everything else in the UG shop handled with the utmost of respect. If you are on the fence about where to go for a haiurcut, or new in town, or fed up with your present cutter, treat yourself...Union Gent will not disappoint. Chuck, Pat et al they're like family. And great haircutters...always.

Reading that really made me proud to be associated with The Union Gent and all the wonderful friends I have made there!

THE UNION GENT GRIEVES THE LOSS OF FRANK ARCHINI

All of us at The Union Gent are grieving the loss of Frank Archini, who worked next to me since I brought my concession to this location. Frank died of a massive coronary on April 5, and he leaves an empty space that cannot be filled. Chuck Tumminia, Frank's business partner at The Union Gent and dearest friend, Patric Whitcomb, Karen Neustadt and I are covering the best we can to make sure that Frank's customers are getting haircuts as needed, but we can never "replace" Frank, who was an original in every way.

Frank helped to create the "infamous" Union Gent. He was friendly to everyone and interested in all of our activities and interests. He had a great sense of humor and was generous beyond imagination. Frank touched all of our lives in such positive ways, we will miss him!

The Union Gent's Art Walls.

The good folks at The Union Gent have offered wall-space to display my watercolor paintings. During Spring and Summer, 2010, I am showing a series of gicle'e reproductions of watercolor/gouache landscapes titled "A Tuscony of the Imagination". They are framed and matted, image size 10" X 10", available for $350.00 each or the set of four for $1250.00.

"Pavilion on Lake"

"The Cerulean Tree"

"The Clock Tower"

"Village with Domes"

I am also showing a large, framed gicle'e reproduction of a marbleized ink composition on kozo rice paper with watercolor/gouache embellishments, "Rocks, Water". It is numbered and signed and printed on high-quality watercolor paper, image size 3' X 3', available for $1,250.00.

Also on display is a three-dimensional ceramic sculpture by Jean Cherie.

Please stop by, have an espresso and enjoy the art!
